PERFORMANCES

Self-reversing
performance for extended vocal
ph: Evgenia Chetvertkova
“Self-reversing” is an ongoing project and an innovative performance practice in singing “backwards.” It is designed to recursively confront and interpret the ghosts of female hysteria and to recuperate and empower a female subject in her vocality. The work opens with simple songs, composed by the artist, and then incrementally transforms into a radical vocal experiment. Unfolding backwards, “Self-reversing” invites the audience to re-imagine language and the flows of communication and power through the voice. It also exposes the untamed richness of oppressed vocality in the female body under late capitalism, and it’s stringent requirements for comprehensibility and emotional control in the public sphere.

The work captures, reverses, and re-plays the vocal audio signal, a technique broadly used in music and sound art. But here it is then replayed into the performer’s headphones to be utilized as a “score” for re-interpretation in real time. This process occurs multiple times and with each new iteration is again reversed and fed back to the performer via headphones, so she can sing what she hears. In other words, this score is “looped.” Naturally occurring distortions and mistakes shape the core of the new sound piece through each iteration. They emerge as the result of the recording process.

Walk of Plates
site-specific performance & installation
There were thousand of plates at the abandoned ceramic factory in the North of Spain. They stuck there in the very peculiar phase of transition: already not a clay, but not yet an enamelled and ready to use tableware. That was an invitation to reassign its function and to reveal what such domestic objects as plates conceal behind their familiar guise. Being put in tall pillars they ceased to be just plates. They assembled a new body that rustled, moved, shivered and invited the performer to set a new type of relation with it. The interaction comprised both sound and movement research. It ended up with the actual walk on the pillars of plates put together as a ladder.

"Walk of plates" was created during Just Mad Art residency in 2017.
Later the project was presented at Just Mad Art Fair, Madrid, 2017 in the form of photo documentation, sound installation with field recordings taken during the action and installation of actual plates brought from the factory.

Comfort Zone
site-specific participatory performance
The immersive performance creates a framework for an experiential research on the dynamic within the system "victim – oppressor". The durational work opens when the audience enter the room and sees the performer being locked to the wall by the collar. On the opposite site there is a set of 100 keys, only one of which can open the lock. Some people from the audience succeed in finding the right key and liberate the performer. As soon as it happenes, the "rescuer" is invited to replace the performer on a "victim's chair".

Yawning glory
"Yawning glory" is a polyphony of bored and expressive, effortful and voluntary, laboured and spontaneous yawns. The utterances and gestures of the performer resonated with the audience and caused a natural response. Yawns also were multiplied by being recorded and played back in many layers in real time. Shaping the cluster they gradually ceased to be yawns and altered to another sonic texture..

CLOSENESS
The relational work investigates the possibility for closeness with the other even when it inevitably implies becoming vulnerable. A long needle is attached to the artist's chest. She seeks for the contact by inviting people from the audience to come closer and, perhaps, share an embrace.
